And today’s reason we are an endangered species is: us being under the weather. Yeah, we are doing this to ourselves and the planet and every living organism on it. We’ve evolved from homo sapiens to homo idiotus: a species characterised by repeating the same mistake over and over again while expecting a different result. Flash floods, wild fires, typhoons, heatwaves, tropical storms. Yes, they do occur without fossil fuel emissions, but European heatwaves are now three times more likely, Mediterranean wildfires are ten times more likely and 65% of all European heat deaths can directly be linked to fossil fuels. And now I’ve said it, you’ve heard it and it’s business as usual. I’d be hard pressed to find anyone who wasn’t touched by the news of the dozens of children killed in the flash flood in Texas, and I refuse to believe people will not get upset about the prices the devastating effects this summer will have on food prices in Europe, but then what? —What? Is somebody going to do something? Well, be the change you want to see in the world… or something very similar, because Gandhi never said that. No, I believe he was much wiser. What he actually said in 1913 was: if we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. — There, fixed it for you. But think about it: even Gandhi starts the sentence with “IF we could change ourselves…” Well, can we? Does history not prove otherwise? Do current trends – whether social, political or environmental protection efforts – go to show that we are incapable of changing for the better? Zoltan and I have talked to so many incredibly smart people from all walks of life, and all of them offered up simple solutions: things you can do to inflict change for the better. It’s just like after a breakup: you’ll examine the situation and if you’re a dumb piece of shit, you’ll blame your ex, you’ll blame your childhood traumas or your parents. If you can and want to change, you’ll examine yourself, first and foremost and accept that circumstances are beyond your control. Your ex is not you, your parents are not you and your past is gone. The only thing you can change is your attitude and behaviour and with that, you’ll inflict change on your environment. So, to answer my question: is somebody going to do something? Yes. I am and I will keep doing it. And I’ll spend today’s episode giving you ways not to be a dumb piece of shit and make changes that will help you and help us not die very painful deaths in the short run.
